First, I define trauma as an internalized, subconscious wound that results in some kind of lasting dysfunction and/or disruption in a personβs life.
According to the North American Committee on Religious Trauma Research:
“Religious trauma results from an event, series of events, relationships, or circumstances within or connected to religious beliefs, practices, or structures that is experienced by an individual as overwhelming or disruptive and has lasting adverse effects on a personβs physical, mental, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being.”
Hypnosis is a way to access the subconscious mind via suggestion and imagination to make changes at a deeper level; hypnosis is a state of heightened awareness and suggestibility that lends itself to be conducive for transformational and therapeutic change. While many therapies are effective at managing symptoms, clinical hypnosis can be a powerful way to address root causes.
People tend to have a skewed, inaccurate, and fear-based view of hypnosis based on pop culture and media. Hypnosis is a very safe and natural state and has been a tool for therapeutic change for thousands of years dating back to the sleep temples of Egypt. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not mind control; it actually gives back your mind control over the negative subconscious programming that’s holding you back.
Coaching is a very broad term with many applications. There are coaches for sports, business, career, dating, etc. However, the work that I do has some overlap with therapy as I coach the unconscious mind. Coaching is a collaborative effort to help you achieve your goals, whatever success means to you. (i.e. Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.) This may mean using tools (like hypnosis) to help you overcome the psychological blocks, limiting beliefs, or uncomfortable emotions that are getting in the way. In this sense, coaching can have a therapeutic effect without being therapy. (Somewhat like how exercise, meditation, and certain hobbies can have a therapeutic effect without being therapy).
Traditionally, coaching has been characterized as looking forward toward your goals, while therapy has been characterized as looking toward the past to resolve emotional and developmental issues. Again, there will be some overlap as the coaching that I do is focused on pinpointing and overcoming subconscious blocks to reach your goals.
